Newgrange in the Boyne Valley County Meath is a 5,000 year old passage tomb. Built by Stone Age farmers, it has a diameter of 85m and is 13m high. A 19m passage way leads into a chamber and three alcoves. The passage and chamber are aligned with the rising sun at the winter solstice. The mound is surrounded by 97 large kerbstones, some of which are engraved with Neolithic art.
