Lismore Castle overlooks the river Blackwater at Lismore in County Waterford. It was built by Prince John, soon to be King of England, in 1185. On ascending to the throne he passed it to the Church for use as a Bishop’s Palace. In 1753 it passed to the fourth Duke of Devonshire and is still in the ownership of his descendants.
