Strategically located on the river Maigue near Adare in County Limerick, Desmond Castle was the home of the Fitzgeralds, better known as the Earls of Desmond. It was typical of the fortified medieval castles which were built for security and strength. Much of the original castle was destroyed by Cromwellian forces in 1657. The Office of Public Works now manages and maintains the building.
